The Domain Name System (DNS) is a naming system for anything connected to the internet. DNS associates a domain name (URL) to each of those connected items.
Most of us will only come across DNS as users in respect of the domain names we own and our web hosting. For our purposes we are interested in using DNS to make a link between the domain name (URL) and the IP address so that an internet user can find our web pages by typing the domain name into their web browser.
